Tennis ace Kournikova fells Hurley in net smash
20th September 2000
Russian tennis star Anna Kournikova has been voted most 'clickable' female, beating off all challengers - including Brit rival Elizabeth Hurley.
There was bad news for actress Elizabeth as Anna Kournikova convincingly took the crown with younger males polled in the nationwide survey of 1,000 people conducted by ICM for ONnet, knocking Elizabeth into runner-up role. The Russian polled 53% of the votes with lads aged 18-24, while Liz notched up only 28%.
Liz gained some revenge as online choice of the more `mature man', by toppling the tennis pin-up as the site most likely to be visited by males aged between 45 and 64 years old.
But that was Liz's sole face-saver. Male silver surfers over 65 voted East End girl Barbara Windsor as the leader of the Brit pack, beating Elizabeth Hurley back into second place.
Housewives choice Des Lynam was also the pick of the hits after being voted top cyber male by women `silver surfers', overcoming three younger heart throbs.
The ITV anchorman's Internet site was declared the site most likely to be visited by women over 65. Movie star Tom Cruise, England midfielder David Beckham and TV chef Jamie Oliver were all beaten by Des' successful brand of charm and good looks, in the poll on behalf of ONnet, the pioneering FULL TV Internet service from digital terrestrial TV company ONdigital.
In the shops this week, ONnet offers FULL Internet access through your television and telephone line - no dish, no cable, no PC. ONnet subscription is £5 a month for ONdigital programme subscribers.
In other age groups Tom Cruise and Jamie Oliver battled it out, with the Mission Impossible 2 star named Internet hotshot with girls aged18-24, polling 41% of the vote, while the Naked Chef was dish of the day with women aged 35-44. Surprisingly, Beckham's site fared less favourably - topping more than 9% of votes with only one age group.
"It is great to see that home-grown talent is still favourite with many surfing Britons, although Anna Kournikova is still a pretty hard act to follow. Judging by these results, TV chef Jamie Oliver seems set to remain housewives' choice for a good while yet," said Sales and Marketing Director Guy Laurence.
"Star websites are some of the most popular on the Internet and provide access to the latest news on actors and popstars. ONnet gives our customers the chance to browse the Net including the full range of star websites at home and abroad.
"TV and the Internet are becoming integrated in more UK homes and ONnet is a perfect way for Britain to get online. In many homes, the TV is the friend in the corner. Internet via the TV overcomes the two most common blocks to take-up of the Internet - cost and anxiety."
